  1. I will read:

    E. Shutova. 2010. Automatic Metaphor Interpretation as a Paraphrasing Task. In Proceedings of NAACL 2010, Los Angeles, USA.

    http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~es407/papers/NAACL.pdf

Related paper written by same author. The paper describes a method that produces literal paraphrases for metaphorical expressions.

  2. I plan to read:

    E. Shutova. 2010. Automatic metaphor interpretation as a paraphrasing task. In Proceedings of NAACL 2010, Los Angeles, USA.

The paper introduces a method for metaphor interpretation, which is the second sub-task for metaphor processing.

  3. I plan to read the following paper which describes a method to automatically identify metaphors in text (the first subtask in metaphor processing) :

    E. Shutova, L. Sun and A. Korhonen. 2010. Metaphor Identification Using Verb and Noun Clustering. In Proceedings of COLING 2010, Beijing, China.

  4. I plan to read the following paper which uses a maximum entropy classifier to identify a metaphor.

  5. This week I will read:

Comparing Semantic Role Labeling with Typed Dependency Parsing in Computational Metaphor Identification

Eric P. S. Baumer; James P. White; Bill Tomlinson

The paper looks at using semantic roles to identify metaphors and compares it to the standard approach of differentiating between literal and metaphorical text.

  7. Related paper I chose for this week:

A Fluid Knowledge Representation for Understanding and Generating Creative Metaphors

    Tony Veale and Yanfen Hao

    http://www.aclweb.org/anthology/C/C08/C08-1119.pdf

The authors introduce "Talking Points", a knowledge representation for metaphor that aims to be "just as stretchable and semantically accommodating" as the phenomena itself.

  8. I plan to read the paper

Hunting elusive metaphors using lexical resources. S. Krishnakumaran and X. Zhu. 2007.
    http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1611531

This paper discusses various types of metaphor and presents a method for automatically discovering them using WordNet and bigrams.

  9. Im planning to read:

    T. Veale and Y. Hao. 2008. A fluid knowledge representation for understanding and generating creative metaphors. In Proceedings of COLING 2008, pages 945–952, Manchester, UK.

  10. I am reading

Todd R. Davies and Stuart Russell ``A Logical Approach to Reasoning by Analogy.'' In Proceedings of the Tenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Milan, Italy: Morgan Kaufmann, 1987.

    http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~russell/papers/ijcai87-analogy.ps

Because aren't Analogy and Metaphor the same thing anyway?

Just be happy I'm not putting down Goedel, Escher, Bach as my reading
